NATO International School in Azerbaijan - Winter session

NISA Winter Session was the forth in a series of events on security and cooperation in wider Euro-Atlantic area. These events those were organized by Azerbaijan Youth Euro-Atlantic Organization (AGAAT) in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and with the sponsorship of NATO Public Diplomacy Division started in 2003 with a first ever NATO Summer School in Azerbaijan and continued with II edition of NATO Summer School in 2004 “Changing NATO in the changing World” and with NATO International School Azerbaijan 2005.                     
The NISA Winter Session was held on December 31, 2005- January 6, 2006. Unlike previous sessions and events, the destination of the Winter Session was Guba, pleasant town located on the north-eastern slopes of the Shahdag range of the Greater Caucasus. The participants departed for Guba on 31 December in the morning and came back on January 4 evening, and after participants spent two more days in Baku.      
Official opening program of Winter Session was on 1st January 2006 by participating of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan H.E. Araz Azimov and the director of the Winter Session and lecturer of Qafqaz University Mr. Rovshan Ibrahimov.    
NISA winter session 2005/06 focused on the energy security issues in the Euro-Atlantic area. Its aim was to gather young people to discuss today’s energy problems especially in the region between the three seas. During the winter school the participants had the opportunity to get information from the “first hands” and discuss thoroughly each of the subjects with the professionals and academics.
During the summer school the participants had an opportunity to get information from the “first hands” and discuss thoroughly each of the subjects with the professionals following “the concept of the Three Seas” discussed during the last Summer Session, the topics that were discussed in winter session included:

- political, economic and other aspects of cooperation mechanisms in the region with special focus on energy security;         
- contemporary developments in the energy sector by countries of the Three Seas area; region of the Three seas and its role in energy security
Azerbaijan’s oil strategy;       
- concept of energy security, threats and risks to energy security, political and economic aspects of energy security            ;
-  energy security in the Euro-Atlantic area; role for NATO   ;
- political environment and risks: threat of terrorism and other asymmetric risks
Good governance and transparency, management of revenues;       
- international cooperation in energy security, regional politics: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey;
